Why You Should Switch to Natural Deodorant - Tips to Make the Transition Easier

Using deodorant is an important part of our day to day routine. Sometimes, finding a deodorant that works for us might difficult, especially because there are some people whose body odor is stronger or sweat more than others. Most deodorants have aluminum as an active component and this ingredient can harm your body in many ways. In this post, I am going to explain what effects aluminum has on our body and why you should avoid it. I will also share some tips to make the switch to natural deodorant as easy as possible.



The Differences Between Deodorants & Antiperspirants

First, it is important to remember that a deodorant is not the same as an antiperspirant. It sounds like something obvious, but the truth is that while deodorants minimize the odor generated by sweat in your armpits, antiperspirants inhibit the glands of your armpits to prevent sweating.

Antiperspirants work by clogging the pores in your armpits with strong astringents, such as aluminum salts, which prevent you from perspiring. Basically, the aluminum acts as a plug in your sweat gland, preventing the release of sweat. Ok, what’s the problem? Sweating is a normal process which helps your body naturally eliminate toxins -- it supports proper immune function as well as aids in preventing various diseases related to toxic overload. Not only are the aluminum salts interfering with our body’s natural need to sweat and release toxins from our body, but they are also leaving behind a trail of health risks each time they are applied to your skin.



The Dangers of Aluminum

The main threat, as I mentioned, is aluminum. (Other ingredients that you should avoid are: parabens, triclosan, talc, fragrances, propylene glycol) The real problem lies in that our body does not need aluminum, in which there is no possible benefit of being constantly exposed to it. Because antiperspirants are applied often and on the skin near breasts, some reports claim that the chemicals could be absorbed through your skin and cause estrogen-like hormonal effects.

Aluminum has been linked to breast cancer, it builds up in our lungs, brain, liver, and thyroid, where it can affect the minerals in our bones. read more here One of its most harmful consequences is the effect it has on our brain. Some studies suggest that aluminum deteriorates our brain in such a way that it could be the main cause of mental illnesses such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's.

Making the Switch to Natural Deodorant

When I switched to a natural deodorant for the first time, I noticed I was super stinky (I know, gross), and I would have to apply more than once a day. I learned that when you switch to a natural deodorant you may be extra sweaty and stinky as your body rids itself of toxins. This should normalize soon enough. And once it does, you may find that you sweat even LESS than you did before yeah! Since adjusting is different for everyone, here are some tips to help ensure that you don’t give up and go back to your toxic deodorant. Here are some tips to make this transition easier:

1. Wash regularly: When you first start using a natural deodorant, be extra diligent about hygiene by washing each day, particularly at the end of each day to remove sweat and bacteria. Use a small towel to scrub well and make sure you get rid of old residue.

2. Apply a Pit Mask: To help your body get rid of any nasty toxins and bacteria build-up apply 1/2 teaspoon of bentonite clay mixed with 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar and 1-2 tablespoons of water to your armpits for 10 mins then wash it off. Do this once a week.

3. Dry off and wait: Avoid applying right after showering and shaving. Instead, give your skin the chance to close its pores and adjust to room temperature. Then apply.

4. If at first you don’t succeed dust yourself off and try again: Remember that deodorant is not one-size-fits-all. Try each deodorant for a couple weeks, as it takes your body time to adjust. Know that it might take a few different tries and sometime before finding the right natural deodorant for you. But once you do, you will never go back.
